“Germination on Traces: Expansion Toward the World”
나는 회화를 통해 하나의 생명을 탄생시키고, 그 생명이 살아가는 세계를 구축한다. 이는 단순히 이미지의 생산이 아니라, 나 자신이 사회 속에서 겪는 감정과 압박, 그리고 인간이 근원적으로 가지는 존재의 인정 욕구와 맞닿아 있다. 인간은 누구나 “나는 여기 있다”라는 사실을 증명하고 싶어 한다. 나에게 있어 작업은 그 욕구를 풀어내는 방식이며, 동시에 새로운 생명이 세계 속에 태어나고 기억으로 남는 과정이다.
내가 만들어내는 세계는 섬, 씨앗, 식물, 빛으로 이루어진 풍경이다. 섬은 내면이 감정을 통해 외부와 관계 맺는 방식을 은유하며, 씨앗은 존재의 시작과 가능성을 상징한다. 특히 ‘오’와 ‘후’라는 씨앗 존재는 출발점과 흔적을 남기는 과정을 동시에 보여준다. ‘오’는 뿌리 내리지 못한 채 새로운 가능성을 품고 있으며, ‘후’는 바람을 타고 이동하며 흔적을 남긴다. 이 둘의 서사는 곧 인간 내면의 양가성을 드러낸다. 즉, 안정에 대한 갈망과 변화에 대한 수용, 시작에 대한 설렘과 흔적을 남기려는 욕구가 서로 교차하는 것이다. 내 작업에서 식물은 중요한 모티프다. 식물은 얽히고 증식하며 끊임없이 세계를 확장한다. 씨앗에서 시작해 뿌리를 내리고, 시간의 흐름에 따라 자라나고, 사라지며 또 다른 생명을 낳는다. 이 순환은 곧 인간 존재의 비유이자, 감정이 어떻게 축적되고 흔적으로 남는지를 드러내는 장치다. 그 속에서 빛은 세계를 변화시키는 원동력으로 등장한다. 빛은 공간을 드러내고, 생명에 활력을 불어넣으며, 감정의 양상을 비춘다.
나는 작업을 통해 인간이 어떻게 존재가 되고, 또 어떻게 기억될 수 있는가라는 질문을 던진다. 생명을 하나씩 만들어내는 과정은 단순한 강박이 아니라, 나의 세계를 구축하고 시대의 흔적을 반영하는 창조 행위이다. 작은 식물 하나, 씨앗 하나를 기록하는 행위는 곧 나의 존재를 새기고, 동시에 관람자에게도 자신의 감정을 비춰보게 하는 거울이 된다. 결국 나의 회화는 생명과 흔적, 존재와 기억을 잇는 신화적 이야기를 만들어낸다.
관람자는 화면 속에서 새로운 생명체와 공간을 만나고, 그 안에서 스스로의 존재와 흔적을 되돌아본다. 나의 세계는 고정된 안식처가 아니라, 끊임없이 생겨나고 사라지며, 다시 태어나고 축적되는 살아 있는 공간이다. 그것이 곧 내가 세계를 바라보고, 나 자신을 증명하며, 시대와 연결되는 방식이다.
Through painting, I give birth to a life and construct the world in which that life exists. This is not merely the production of images—it is deeply intertwined with the emotions and pressures I experience in society, and with the fundamental human desire for recognition: the urge to prove, “I am here.” For me, artmaking is a way to express that desire while witnessing the birth of new life and its transformation into memory.
The world I create is composed of islands, seeds, plants, and light. The island symbolizes the way the inner self connects with the outer world through emotion, while the seed represents the beginning of existence and infinite possibility. Among them, the beings O and Hoo embody both the starting point and the process of leaving traces. O holds within itself potential yet remains unrooted, whereas Hoo, carried by the wind, leaves behind traces of its journey. Their narratives reveal the ambivalence of human nature—the longing for stability versus the acceptance of change, the excitement of beginnings versus the desire to be remembered.
In my work, the plant is a central motif. It entwines, proliferates, and continuously expands the world. From the seed to the root, through growth and decay, and toward regeneration, this cycle becomes a metaphor for human existence—a system that reflects how emotions accumulate and leave imprints over time. Within this cycle, light acts as the driving force that transforms the world. It unveils space, breathes vitality into life, and illuminates emotional states.
Through my practice, I question how humans come into being and how they might be remembered. The act of creating life is not a mere compulsion but an act of world-building that reflects both my inner self and the traces of the era I live in. To record a single seed or a plant is to inscribe my existence while offering the viewer a mirror through which to reflect their own emotions. My paintings thus weave a mythic narrative connecting life and trace, existence and memory.
The viewer encounters new life forms and spaces within my works and, through them, revisits their own sense of being and trace. My world is not a fixed sanctuary—it is a living space that constantly emerges, disappears, and is reborn through accumulation. This is how I perceive the world, affirm my own existence, and connect myself to the time I live in.
